Port Chalmers Transport

As promised, here are the transport arrangements for the 1.30pm - 4.30pm Port Chalmers gig on Saturday afternoon at the Masonic Lodge in Wickliffe Tce.

At the first two shows, there will be a list at the door where people who need transport can put their name down. This will give us an idea of the numbers we need to cater for.

Mini-vans will leave from outside Arc Café at 1pm on Saturday, and return to Dunedin after the show. Don't be late! : )

There is also a bus service (which takes 20 minutes), as follows:

City to Port Chalmers – leaves from Cumberland St stand 4 (by Countdown supermarket) at 12.30pm, and 3.15pm.

Port Chalmers to City – leaves from Port Chalmers main street at 3.50pm, 5.50pm, and 7.00pm.

If you are driving out there, as you enter the Port Chalmers main street turn right, and go over the railway tracks. You are now on Wickliffe Tce, and 50 metres ahead on your left is the Masonic Lodge. You can't miss it - there are no windows (well, hardly any!).

Lines of Flight Update

We are now counting down the days til the music kicks off, getting excited! The Dunedin Fringe Festival has started here already, and there are lots of weird and wonderful activities happening. This is an update to let you know more essential information about LInes of Flight 2006.

The film makers have been sorted out now, and include the following creators - Kim Pieters, Martin Kean, Ana Terry, Eve Gordon, Joe Musgrove & Lloyd Barrett (from Australia), Eddie Stevens, Dave Black, Jenny Ward (live VJing), Michael Morley, Campbell Kneale, Rachel Shearer, Nathan Thompson, Jim Currin, Alastair Galbraith and Anoushka Akel. Many of these will be performing to their own films.

This Sunday 1 October, Radio One (91FM) in Dunedin is broadcasting a 2 hour Lines of Flight radio special, featuring interviews and lots of music from the upcoming performers. This will be from 6-8pm and is hosted by Jim Currin, who will be joined by Peter Stapleton and Peter Porteous. Not sure if this is to be webcast or not - check out r1.co.nz. There will also be an interview/feature on Lines of Flight in this Saturday's Otago Daily Times.

The door prices for the shows have been announced - $10 for the two DPAG shows (Friday and Saturday nights), and $8 for the other three shows. There will be a $30 LOF Festival Pass available which gives access to all 5 shows; this is recommended to all as it will save you money!

All shows will start promptly (for logistical reasons), so don't think that 7.30pm on the poster means a 9.30pm start time! We wouldn't want people to miss their favourite acts; you have been warned! : )

The transport for the Port Chalmers Saturday afternoon show will be posted in more detail soon. There is a regular bus service to and from town, but we will also be organising mini-vans at the beginning and the end of the show. This really is a great venue (as all Masonic Lodges are), so we would encourage all people to get out there.

Venues confirmed

The venues and times for the festival have now been confirmed and are as follows:

So, two shows at Arc, two at the Art Gallery and one show ten minutes out of town at Port Chalmers in the amazing Masonic Lodge. We have settled on the lineups for each show, and will post these shortly.

In more exciting news, Alastair Galbraith and Maxine Funke will be joined by HDU drummer Dino Karlis, who will be returning from Melbourne for this show.

The lineup has been confirmed as 18 acts, as no amount of arm twisting or blackmail would convince Nigel Bunn to perform - maybe next time, Nigel!

3 Forks, Lines of Flight 2004

Gate, and more

The lineup for the festival is getting closer to final confirmation, with more exciting acts booked! We have secured funding to put towards travel expenses and artists' fees which is great news, and things are progressing nicely.

In addition to the previous list of acts, we can now add the following:

Venues will be announced shortly, and the lineup for each show will also be posted. But really, you need to go to them all, to achieve full imersion in this alternate universe!

Crude

We are pleased to announce that Matt Middleton, better known to you as Crude, has now been added to the lineup. Matt is incredibly prolific (check out crude.co.nz, and prepare to be overwhelmed), defies categorisation, and has been creating some of the most interesting music around these parts for some time now. Brace yourself for the live show!

Welcome to the Lines of Flight 2006 blog

This has been set up to give information about the upcoming Lines of Flight festival in Dunedin, Aotearoa/New Zealand. We will update it from time to time, and attempt to answer queries as they come to hand.

Lines of Flight is a festival combining experimental music and film. It is run as part of the Otago Fringe Festival, and has been held every two years starting back in 2000.

It is the primary event for bands and performers of the experimental/improvised/free noise persuasion around the country to get together, play and catch up on what everyone else is doing! Most of the bands that perform are better known overseas than here – a comment on the small population size of New Zealand, and the non-mainstream appeal of the music!

The plan is to host the festival over four days with five shows this time, from Thursday 5th October 2006 through to Sunday 8th October 2006. Venues and dates are being confirmed at present, and will be announced in due course. All venues will be in Dunedin City.

The line-up is still being finalised, and some of the performers’ appearances will depend on the level of funding we can get from our grant applications.

Having said that, here is a provisional list of performers to whet your appetites! The line-up is as strong as ever, and every show will be a must see.

As mentioned, this list will have some changes and additions made to it once we have spoken to a few other performers, and when we have found out how much funding we have been awarded (and therefore how much in the way of travel expenses we can provide). The final line-up promises to be fantastic, and we are very excited to once again have the cream of the New Zealand experimental/improvised/free noise community assembled in one place!

Projected films will accompany the music, and these are being co-ordinated by Kim Pieters, a leading local experimental film maker, painter and musician. The films are an integral part of the performances, and the overall atmosphere.

This blog will be updated from time to time as new developments come to light. Feel free to use the comments button to ask questions, and we will do our best to answer them, on- or off-line.
